West Nile Virus – Mosquito Spray
To begin, the West Nile Virus is the most common virus from mosquitoes in the United States. Even though most people who get infected with the West Nile Virus do not have symptoms or will have a mild illness similar to the flu it can cause severe complications. This virus can cause severe neurological problems like encephalitis, which is brain inflammation, or sometimes even meningitis, which is the inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The symptoms of severe West Nile Virus are high fever, headache, neck stiffness, confusion, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness, and paralysis.
Zika Virus
Next, Zika Virus is another illness to keep an eye out for. Zika Virus has gained a lot of global attention because of its close relation with birth defects in infants that are born to mothers who are infected. Symptoms of Zika Virus are usually very mild for adults, women who are pregnant or are planning to be should be particularly careful. The symptoms of Zika Virus are fever, rash, headache, joint pain, conjunctivitis (red eyes), and muscle pain.
Dengue
The next serious illness from mosquitos is dengue. Dengue is an extremely painful and debilitating mosquito-borne disease that can be found in subtropical and tropical regions globally. Dengue can cause many symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, vomiting, nausea, and rash. In very severe cases, dengue can turn into dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS), which can be fatal.
Chikungunya
The next disease that can be carried by mosquitoes is Chikungunya. Chikungunya is a disease that can cause severe joint pain and fever which can be debilitating and very long-lasting. The other symptoms that could arise are muscle pain, headache, nausea, rash, and fatigue. Currently, there is no specific treatment for chikungunya.
EEE Virus
Eastern Equine Encephalitis also known as EEE is another virus that should be taken very seriously. EEE is a very rare virus but it is also very dangerous. Just like many other mosquito-borne illnesses, it can cause brain inflammation. Symptoms of EEE usually appear 4 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The symptoms of EEE include chills, fever, malaise, joint pain, and muscle pain. In very severe cases EEE can cause seizures, comas, and sometimes even death.
